Nineteen calculators, four kinds of question
Financial calculators look interchangeable from the outside and are not. The ones collected here answer four distinct questions, and picking the wrong one is how people end up comparing loans that are not comparable.
| Question | Calculators |
|---|---|
| What will this cost me to borrow? | Loan, Mortgage, Auto Loan, Personal Loan, Card Payoff, Minimum Payment |
| Is this offer actually cheaper than that one? | APR, Mortgage APR |
| What will my money grow to? | Interest, ROI, Rule of 72, Fixed Deposit TDR, Fixed Deposit STDR, Recurring Deposit DPS |
| What is this worth per hour, per month, per person? | Hourly to Salary, Salary Increase, Profit, Sales Tax, Tip |
Interest rate and APR are not the same number
The single most expensive misunderstanding in consumer borrowing is treating the advertised interest rate as the cost of a loan. The nominal rate prices only the money you borrow. The annual percentage rate also prices the fees you pay to get it — origination charges, discount points, broker fees, some closing costs — by spreading them across the term and re-solving for the rate that would produce the same total.
Two mortgages at 6.25% are not the same mortgage if one charges two points up front and the other charges none. Run both through the mortgage APR calculator and the gap becomes visible. The catch worth knowing: APR assumes you keep the loan for the whole term. If you expect to refinance or move in five years, a low-rate/high-fee loan can look better on APR and still cost you more in practice, because you never get to amortise the fees.
Why the payment is not the whole story either
Lengthening a term always lowers the monthly payment and almost always raises the total interest. A $30,000 car loan at 7% costs about $3,300 in interest over 36 months and about $5,600 over 60. The amortization schedule on each loan calculator exists so that the second number is as visible as the first.
Amortization, in one paragraph
An amortising loan has a fixed payment split between interest and principal. Interest is charged on the balance that is still outstanding, so early payments are mostly interest and late payments are mostly principal. This is why paying an extra $100 in month three saves far more than paying an extra $100 in month two hundred, and why the schedules on these calculators show the split month by month rather than only the totals.
The South Asian deposit products: TDR, STDR and DPS
Three of these calculators cover products that exist in Bangladeshi and Indian retail banking and have no direct equivalent in most Western tool sites, which is why they are worth explaining properly.
- TDR (Term Deposit Receipt) is a fixed deposit that pays interest out at each interval — monthly, quarterly or at maturity. The principal does not grow. Choose it when you want the deposit to generate income you actually receive. Calculate a TDR.
- STDR (Special Term Deposit Receipt) is the same deposit with the interest retained and compounded, usually quarterly, so the maturity value is larger than the sum of the TDR payouts on the same rate and tenure. Choose it when you do not need the income now. Calculate an STDR.
- DPS (Deposit Pension Scheme) is a recurring deposit: a fixed amount paid in every month for a set number of years, with interest compounding on the accumulating balance. Each instalment earns for a different length of time, which is why the maturity figure is not something you can work out in your head. Calculate a DPS.
All three are subject to deductions that materially change what you receive: excise duty charged on the account balance, and advance income tax withheld from the interest at source. The calculators let you enter both so the maturity figure is the amount that reaches you, not the gross figure a rate table implies.
What these calculators are and are not
Every calculator here is deterministic arithmetic using the standard published formula for the product, and each page states the formula it uses. They are educational tools for comparing options and understanding structure. They are not financial advice, they do not know your jurisdiction's tax rules, and they cannot see the terms in a specific lender's contract. Before you sign anything, the binding numbers are the ones on the lender's own disclosure.
